Looking for that special card for that special person? Welcome to
NZinga African American/Afrocentric Greeting Cards. First, I
know a lot of people are wondering, "Why choose a name so
hard to pronounce?". Well, it all started during college. I
remember reading the story about 16th century Queen NZing(h)a
(pronounced In-Zing-ah)...she was a fierce politician, warrior and
revered leader of her tribe in what is now Angola, in southwest
Africa. This extraordinary black woman, who's reign was during
the height of the trans-atlantic slave trade (and who by the way
was probably in her 50's or 60's at the time) led her tribe both in
spirit and on the battle field for over 20 years, thwarting the
eventual abandoned Portuguese attempts at enslavement of her
beloved people...They just gave up...you know we sistahs can be
exasperating once you get us fired up!! lol....I was so impressed
by the legend of her fierce determination and leadership that when
I originally came up with the concept of my greeting card biz in
1993, I couldn't think of any other name that epitomized the
strength, tenacity, love of family and determination against
seemingly insurmountable odds that has historically characterized
black women as a whole...Queen NZing(h)a represents us ALL--
more than 400 years later and I wanted to honor her spirit in my
way by naming my company after her. Hopefully, it will prove to
be worthy of the name.... Fast forward to 2005..yes, there are
'mainstream' greeting card companies that create imagery of black
people as THEY see us, but at Nzinga, we wanted to present
images as we REALLY are and not just as others perceive us.
